10 most unusual birds of our planet

On the globe, there are over 10,000 species of birds, most of which fit into our traditional ideas about the appearance of birds. But there are real originals among them, whose appearance more likely resembles fairy-tale characters or inhabitants of past geological epochs than the usual birds. Today we offer a look at the most unusual birds of our planet.

Abyssinian horned raven

This bird belongs to the family of rhinos that are famous for their exotic beaks. Abyssinian horned crows are large birds of prey that live in Africa, in the savannah and semi-desert zones.

Spectacled Gaga

This bird from the family of ducks with all its appearance proves that unusual birds live not only in hot countries. Spectacled eider is found on the coast of the Arctic Ocean. The males have a light color of feathers, and the females are brown, but both of them look very unusual because of their fur beaks.

Helmeted Cassowary

These birds with a horned helmet on their head live in New Guinea and the surrounding territories. Helmeted cassowaries are very large birds up to 1.7 meters tall, with powerful legs. They do not know how to fly.

Sage Grouse

Unusual bags on the chest are possessed only by males of sage black grouse. They serve to extract loud sounds during the mating season. These birds of the pheasant family inhabit wormwood steppes in North America.

Fan-shaped crowned pigeon

These are gray and white pigeons in our country, and amazing blue pigeons live on the island of New Guinea, whose head is decorated with a royal crown of openwork feathers. These are quite large birds up to 60-70 centimeters in size, which feed on the fruits and seeds of plants.

Kitoglav

This unusual bird of the stork family in appearance resembles a creature of the dinosaur era rather than a stork. You can meet a couple like in the photo in the swampy areas of Central Africa, where they are an endangered species everywhere. The wingspan of the bird reaches 2 meters, and the growth is 1.2 meters. Whaleheads, like most storks, feed on small fish, frogs and snakes.

Ecuadorian umbrella bird

The males of the Ecuadorian umbrella bird, which lives in the moist forests of Colombia and Ecuador, have an unusual outgrowth on their chest, covered with feathers. These are the so-called earrings, which reach a length of 35 centimeters (with a total male size of about 50 centimeters).

Big indian kalao

This is a large rhino bird, the size of which reaches 1.5 meters. Large Indian kalao live in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and feed on the fruits of the trees, among which the most appreciated are the fruits of the fig tree.

Blue-footed booby

These birds have very strange blue legs that set them apart from other birds. Large colonies of these birds live on the Galapagos Islands and on the Pacific coast of the American continent.

Hatchet

This bird outwardly resembles the famous dead end bird, the image of which was made up by make-up artists. The hatchet has unusual long gray “eyebrows” and a thoughtful grimace. These birds come from the sort of puffins in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean.
